We constantly receive applications from professional drivers from all over the world – as do many other companies. On the one hand, this is very welcome. On the other hand, many of these applications are generated by artificial intelligence and are very generic – sent almost indiscriminately. Consequently, many of these applications are never even opened; often, they are simply ignored and go unanswered. This primarily is true for applications from Tunisia and Morocco.

The real issue with these applications is that the candidates lack an EU driver’s license and the corresponding EU driver qualification. With only a national Class C or CE license, it is virtually impossible to secure a job in Germany.

Why is this the case?

The two main hurdles are obtaining an EU driving license and an EU driver qualification card (Code 95/FQN). Companies want to see both upfront. Obtaining a driving license in Germany, in particular, is very expensive. Companies are unwilling to cover this cost if there is no guarantee that the candidate will passe the exam and stay with the company for the long term rather than switching to a competitor – something no one can unfortunately guarantee.

It takes at least 12 months for the cost of such a license to pay for itself. Furthermore, there are currently hardly any opportunities to obtain an EU driving license in another EU country (where it is perhaps cheaper) and then convert to Germany; the legal situation regarding this remains very complicated. There is also always a requirement to speak German – at least at A2 level. The accelerated initial qualification can now also be completed in several foreign languages.

However, relocating to Germany is generally not an option without basic knowledge of German. Otherwise, it is impossible to either pass the exams in Germany or communicate with customers.

Many jobs at German freight forwarding and logistics companies involve local or regional transport, with day shifts running from Monday to Friday. This places a cap on the salaries these employers can offer. Consequently, these positions are better suited to drivers looking for a regular job who perhaps want to stay closer to their families.

Applications welcome

For this reason, we advise against sending out applications indiscriminately. It is a waste of effort. And, since we keep receiving inquiries about this: The idea of paying for the driver’s license yourself is admirable. The only way to do this would be to enter Germany using the “Opportunity Card” (*Chancenkarte*) visa. You can check here whether you qualify. However, there is no guarantee that you will find a job afterwards; the risk and costs are entirely yours to bear. We would advise against this approach.
